100 Rules of Happiness

Rule 04

Learn something new! Expand your horizons. Drive, dance, pick a sport, play an instrument, cook. It’s NEVER too late.

Learning new things, being curious and engaged in moderately difficult yet doable activities improves our happiness and wellbeing in numerous ways. It opens our minds to new ideas and possibilities, gives us a sense of accomplishment, improves our mood, self-esteem, creativity, adaptability, resourcefulness and resilience. and the best part is that it's not only for the young. In fact, the older we are, the more benefits we can reap by learning new skills, including warding off depression, memory loss, dementia and having a sense of purpose, fulfilment and excitement. Thankfully, our brains have ample neuroplasticity to adapt and pick up new stuff even in our mature years. Yes, an old dog can learn new tricks too!
